3. University of Technology, Sydney (UTS)

On 26 January 1988 — with the commencement of the University of Technology, Sydney, Act — the former New South Wales Institute of Technology became the University of Technology, Sydney.

The New South Wales Institute of Technology was established in 1964. The School of Design of the former Sydney College of the Arts was incorporated into the Institute on 25 January 1988.

On 1 January 1990, the Institute of Technical and Adult Teacher Education and the Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education were amalgamated with the existing University of Technology, Sydney to form the current UTS. On 1 August 2015, the comma was removed from the University’s title to become the current University of Technology Sydney.

4. University of Western Australia (UWA)

The University of Western Australia’s partnership with the Aboriginal community of Western Australia began in 1988 with the establishment of the Centre for Aboriginal Programmes (now the School of Indigenous Studies).

In 2016, UWA consolidated the Indigenous Portfolio under the leadership of a Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Education who is also responsible for the School of Indigenous Studies.

The Indigenous Portfolio is the visible gateway into all areas of the University for the Indigenous community, both on and off campus, providing cultural affirmation and support to Indigenous staff and students across the University.

5. University of Queensland (UQ)

The University of Queensland (UQ) has also moved up this year, and is now ranked within the global top 50 (it’s joint 47th). Mainly located in Brisbane, UQ is a founding member of the Group of Eight, a coalition of research-intensive Australian universities which are responsible for such innovations as the invention of the HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.
